Geotagging and The World Cup

The current 2014 World Cup in Brazil has brought a lot to my attention. First, almost all of my Facebook friends are bandwagon fans. I swear, before the World Cup started not one person watched soccer or really knew anything about the US Men’s National Team (USMNT), even during the London Olympics. Now, all I see are statuses full of undying support and love for USA Soccer. Second, geotagging (or the ability of social media platforms to identify your exact location when you send out an update) is somewhat scary personal security-wise, but really freaking cool.
Geotagging Technology
The Ghana match earlier this week proved that the USMNT is ready for battle. After more than an hour of serious pressure, the U.S. beat Ghana 2-1 and put themselves in prime position to quality from Group G in the process. And while Jermaine Jones walked away as the unlikely superstar, it’s the fans’ excitement that reveals just how global the World Cup really is (and how the USA is suddenly super supportive). Thanks to geotagging technology, any Tweets mentioning key terms around the World Cup game were recorded and analyzed. You can see how the world responded to the Ghana vs. USA match in real time here.
Looks to me like the middle of the country needs to be better bandwagon fans! The USMNT faces Portugal this Sunday, June 22 next. Here’s what you need to know.
