A number of our clients at DFM are eCommerce sites. Some of our clients have only a few products, while others have thousands. Regardless of size there are a few SEO tips for Ecommerce sites that are ubiquitous.
Fix Broken Links
Using both Moz and Google Webmaster tools, we are constantly on the look out for broken links in Google. The links themselves still carry weight in terms of ranking. However, if those links are broken the actual quality scores you get due to high bounce rate because the page isn’t there can cause pages to fall within Google search results.
Use Rel = “Canonical”
Whether it’s a Drupal Commerce site, WordPress or Magento; almost every product page will have duplicated content from the original product page. This way consumers can filter and source the products they want. Because of this, websites needs to implement an HTML tag called Rel=”canonical”. It’s a term that goes within your original website page or in the duplicated pages, telling Google that content is duplicated. This can help you stay out of a penalty Google has for duplicated content.
Have Original Product Descriptions and Meta Tags
It’s difficult to write content for products or categories, but it is worth it. One of the easiest ways to get caught in a trap is to copy and paste a manufacturer’s description within the page and get nailed for duplicated content. Take some time or hire a copywriter to write product descriptions and meta tags for your site that are original.
We use the above pretty much on all of the eCommerce sites we manage to make sure we keep the quality of the site high for both Google and the end customer.
