Google Plus Strategies for Business

Google plus launched with much fan fare in July and quickly rose to 10 million unique users online. Many people asked us what are our Google Plus strategies for business. We can boil them down into one tactic and help people understand what they aren’t missing.
Strategy #1
The first Google Plus strategy for business is to incorporate the +1 tag onto every page. This is similar to the Facebook like button strategy. Business websites should include the +1 button simply because it will be used to increase your position in organic search results. This button should be incorporated with a Facebook Like button, Tweet button and LinkedIn share button if you are B2B.
Strategy #2
The second Google Plus strategy for business is to not worry about a Google plus page. If you have the time and want to set one up, by all means spend a couple of hours to do it, but only if you have completed a Facebook page, Twitter page and LinkedIn Profile and those pages are all up to date and working fine. Frankly, even if they are up to date you are better off incorporating your webpages into Facebook apps via iFrame then worry about a Google plus page.
Why? for a couple of reasons:
- Google plus doesn’t offer pages for business yet. You can get around this by using your work email and setting up a dummy account, but it seems a bit hacky.
- Once Google plus gets company pages set-up the second reason is eyeballs. While Google plus has over 25 million users, the amount of traffic going to the page has cratered. My guess is simply because there is no one there. Here is a graph from Chitka that shows how much traffic Google plus spiked during its public debut and then trailed off quite rapidly.
Our guess as to why the traffic has died is simply how utterly empty Google plus feels when you log in. Very few of my friends put a status in both Google and Facebook and hardly any are +1ing and commenting on any of my status updates. It’s simply party mechanics. Everyone went to the Google plus party, saw that none of the cool kids were there and they did have anything cool to make them stay, so they went back to the cool kids party.
So to sum up our Google plus strategies for business: Get the +1 button on your site and don’t lose any sleep on Google + social networking.
